Ellipses make dishes that are functional as well as attractive. The Botanic Garden series of Portmeirion Pottery is world famous. It was designed by Susan Williams-Ellis who painted the flower images printed on them. She liked elliptical platters because they were good for serving food and because the shape was like a frame for her decorations.
