Spiral

Spirals are curves that go round and round a central point while getting further away from it. They are attractive shapes in art and design and they are found in nature, for example in snail shells or in water going down a plughole.

There are many different types of spirals. The simplest type is the arithmetic spiral which grows the same amount with every turn. A logarithmic spiral grows more quickly. A Fibonacci spiral is one based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. Spirals can be 3-dimensional too, for example a spiral staircase or a spiral around a sphere, which gets wider in the middle and narrower at top and bottom.

In art, spirals often signify mysteries. They are the basis of designs for many mazes. They are sometimes associated with spiritual beliefs.
